On Leash Training

Whether you have a Poodle or a German Shepherd, on-leash training is perhaps one of the most important skills you can teach your dog. At Phil's K9 Training, we firmly believe that on-leash training is the key to success in a variety of circumstances and is the first step to other training opportunities with your dog.

  • Safety – The first goal of on-leash training is safety. On-leash training sets boundaries and gives you peace of mind.

  • Communication – If you think of the leash as a communication device to your dog. Communicating with your dog through on-leash training is a great way to give yourself more control without having to say a word.

  • Expectations – When your dog is wearing his leash, he needs to know that you are in charge of his walking and interactions with others. You can relay your expectations, and your dog will follow your lead.

  • Trust – On-leash training is a great way to develop trust between you and your dog. Once you have taught your puppy that she is safer with you than anywhere else, you will find that other training opportunities come with ease.

On/Off Leash Training

There are a lot of reasons your dog should have off-leash training. At Phil's K9 Training, we believe training your dog to be your best friend and a loyal companion is important, and off-leash training is one way to strengthen your bond and let your dog know what is expected of them. When you complete on/off leash training dog will understand your verbal commands and react as he has been taught.

In reality, the best off-leash training begins with on-leash training. But, depending on your circumstances, you may not always have a leash or be able to use it to communicate with them. In these instances, it is important to be able to communicate what is expected from your dog and get the results you expect. Whether you need your dog to sit and wait to cross the street, ignore a stranger, or come when they are called, off-leash training allows you to protect your dog and enjoy the freedom of a trained dog. And, just like with any other kind of training, consistency is the key to success.
